長く英和辞典の編集に関わっている知己のO氏に、「serendipity」について調べていただいた。こちらの責任で整理すると、以下の通り。
『American Heritage College Dictionary 4 2002（アメリカン・ヘリテッジ辞典大学版：米国の、正統派を自認する辞典）』によれば、
serendipity
(1) the faculty of making fortunate discoveries by accident （ 偶然に幸運な発見をする能力←抽象名詞[U]）
(2) the fact or occurrence of such discoveries （そのような発見をするという事実、発見をすること←抽象名詞[U]）
(3) an instance of making such a discovery（そのような発見の実例←具象名詞[C]）
※興味（価値）あるものを発見する能力(faculty)が中心の概念になっている。
『Merriam-Webster's Advanced Learner's English Dictionary 2008（メリアム・ウエブスター学習辞典：米国を代表するメリアム・ウエブスター社の学習辞典）』によれば、
serendipity (literary) luck that takes the form of finding valuable or pleasant things that are not looked for ｟（探していたのではないが）価値あるものを発見するという形をとる幸運｠
文例：“They found each other by pure serendipity.”
『Cambridge Advanced Learner's Dictionary 2003（ケンブリッジ学習辞典）』によれば、
serendipity [U] the lucky tendency to find interesting or valuable things by chance（幸運な傾向）
文例：“Reading should be an adventure, a personal experience full of serendipitous surprises.”
『Cobuild Advanced Dictionary 2009｟コウビルド辞典（英国）｠』によれば、
serendipity: Serendipity is the luck some people have in finding or creating interesting or valuable things by chance ※luckを中心概念として定義。
文例：“Some of the effects in my garden have been the result of serendipity.”
『LDOCE5 2009｟ロングマン辞典（英国）｠』によれば、
serendipity [U] (literary) when interesting or valuable discoveries are made by accident →luck
辞書のデータからは、「serendipity」は、能力(faculty）と幸運（luck）の二つの意味があるということである。「運も能力の内」とは勝負師のことばであるが、二つが相まって、偶然の発見が生まれるということだろう。
